What If (1)

by Adam Jennings

As soon as we wake up in the morning, we start making decisions. Even as we lie in bed, we might be deciding how our day will play out. You might not think about that, but it’s true!

In an article titled “How Many Decisions Do We Make Each Day?”, PsychologyToday.com reports that “…some sources suggest that the average person makes an eye-popping 35,000 choices per day. Assuming that most people spend around seven hours per day sleeping and thus blissfully choice-free, that makes roughly 2,000 decisions per hour or one decision every two seconds”. That is truly incredible!

The latter part of Jeremiah 7:13 states “…and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you, but you did not answer” …

My father was called into God’s Church around 1968. God had extended to my dad a calling. He had to make a choice!

What if my dad received the calling from God, but decided not to accept it?
What if he walked away from that calling? Could it be that myself, or my family might not be in God’s church today? I shudder to think.

What “second (or 3rd, 4th or 5th etc) generation Christians” have, is something incredibly precious and UNIQUE.
God has called your parent(s), they then accepted that call, and now that calling (or we might say invitation) has subsequently been handed down to you!

You now have to make the decision to want to follow the path that God called your parent(s) to live; to walk in God’s ways, to love Him and always put Him first (Mat.22:37-40, Deut.6:5).

This situation has often been called an “RSVP” in God’s Church. RSVP means “Respond, if you please”, and God has extended this RSVP to all who have been raised in God’s Church. As second-generation children who have grown up in the Church of God, the time will come for you to make a decision – just like your parent(s) have.

What will you do?  Will you decide to live a godly life?
If you do, God has this to say:

  • Psalm 121:7-8 says that God promises to protect us if we decide to live His way of life.
  • Isaiah 41:10 says He will strengthen us and uphold us if we decide to live His way of life.
  • Psalm 34:7 says that Gods angels will “encamp” around us, if we follow God’s way of life.
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:3 says that God will guard us from Satan.
  • We read in Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
  • Then the kingdom of God awaits you as a firstfruit in the family of God! Living forever in God’s family and power beyond what we can fathom (1 Cor. 2:9)!

But what if you DON’T want the RSVP? What if you decide to walk away from those promises God mentions in the scriptures above?
Some things to remember:

  • Proverbs 14:12 says that the way we think is best to live, brings death!
  • Isaiah 59:2 mentions that a separation occurs if we neglect God’s way of life, which would void all the scriptures of God’s protection and guidance in our lives.
  • No kingdom of God as a firstfruit.

What will you decide?
Your future as a second-generation Christian looks extremely promising, if your life is led by the ways of God. You might start to consider being baptised, and even further putting your life in God’s hands, just like your parent(s) have.

But what if you don’t?

Your brain is making upward of 35,000 decisions each day, but in those decisions, will your situation as a second generation Christian come up, and what your future will be? You need to be thinking about this now! An awesome future is being offered to you – The decision is yours.
